Salmonella Scare Prompts Egg Recall In NY, NJ

More than 200 million eggs pulled from New York and eight other states over salmonella fears

Alternatively, bacteria in the hen's ovary or oviduct can get to the egg before the shell forms around it, according to the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service.

These eggs could have been infected with Salmonella, a well-known bacteria which can trigger serious and even fatal infections in young children, elderly, and other people with different immunity issues.

The eggs were recalled by producer Rose Acre Farms of Seymour, Indiana "through an abundance of caution", the FDA's statement said.

In a Saturday update, the FDA reports it linked the contamination to Rose Acre Farms' Hyde County, North Carolina-based farm.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a notice about the recall Friday, warning consumers that 22 illnesses have been reported in states along the east coast of the USA because of the eggs.

The FDA says anyone who purchased the eggs should discard them or return them to where they were purchased for a refund.
