DS AIRSTRIKES US UK and French forces attacked three targets in Syria

The strikes were in retaliation to an April 7 suspected chemical weapons attack in the town of Douma, near Damascus, that killed more than 40 people.

The Damascus sky lights up missile fire as the US launches an attack on Syria targeting different parts of the capital early Saturday, April 14, 2018.

Russian S-400 Triumph/SA-21 Growler medium-range and long-range surface-to-air missile systems are transported during the Victory Day parade at Red Square, in Moscow, on May 9, 2015.

Lieberman acknowledged that the S-300 systems were already being used in Syria, but only in defense of Russian assets. Western powers have blamed Syrian President Bashar Assad's government for the suspected attack.

Syria, which destroyed all of its chemical stockpiles in 2013 and 2014 under worldwide supervision, has denied the claims, while Moscow provided evidence that the Douma attack was actually fabricated. They also claimed to have shot down most of the Western missiles launched on April 14 - a claim denied by the Pentagon.

Syria and its ally Russian Federation have repeatedly denied that a chemical attack took place in Douma, which is now under government control.

Immediately following the reports that Syria would be getting S-300s, Israel threatened to destroy the S- systems if Israeli warplanes are targeted.

The meeting is the final stage of preparations for the SCO summit on June 9-10 in China's Qingdao. That sparked a rebuke from China, which considers Pakistan an "all-weather friend".

The US Department of Defense has seen no verifiable proof to support Russian claims of having in its possession intact Tomahawk missiles captured in Syria, department spokesperson Eric Pahon told Sputnik on Wednesday.

He also claimed that USA missiles were captured and sent to Moscow so they could improve Russia's own weapons systems. "Especially we cannot worry about the fact that such a state of things between Israel and Iran, which is now present in Israel's neighboring Syria could destabilize and aggravate the situation in the middle East", the Ambassador added.

Israel and Russian Federation have maintained close contact in order to prevent any clashes between their air forces in the skies over Syria. Russian Federation said the attacks removed all hurdles for providing Syria with the much better S-300.

Al-Khatib said he and fellow activists try not to get disheartened by the fact that efforts to bring those responsible for war crimes in Syria to trial have so far been unsuccessful.

"For several years we've been constantly in coordination and able to avoid friction with the Russians", he said.

"One thing should be clear - if someone fires on our planes, we will destroy them", Lieberman was reported by Haaretz as saying.
