Democrats have prevailed in two special elections for the NY state Senate - but Republicans will retain control thanks to the support of a breakaway Democrat.

Barasso added that Democrats' use of the full 30 hours of debate allowed under present Senate rules - even for non-controversial nominees - makes it impossible for lawmakers to deal with a backlog of pending legislation.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo joined Westchester County Executive George Latimer Sunday to stump for Shelley Mayer in the final stretch of a key state Senate race.

The move, regardless of Tuesday's special election contests, gives the Republican the one extra vote they need to retain power in the Senate.

A Brooklyn state senator who could have helped flip the Senate to the Democrats has chose to stay with the Republicans.

Simcha Felder has long sat with Senate Republicans, to the frustration of other Democrats.

Vox's MattYgelsias wrote that the win serves "as a further sign of the strong wind at Democrats' backs downballot in the Trump era, with their candidate Steve Stern running 11 points ahead of Hillary Clinton's 2016 margin in the seat and 15 points ahead of Barack Obama's 2012 margin".

While the lawsuit has been called "frivolous" and "baseless", Donovan was criticized by some Democrats who said she didn't do her job properly. Felder, of Brooklyn, faces a Democratic primary in the fall in his conservative district, where he has strong Democratic and Republican support.

They also claimed to have shot down most of the Western missiles launched on April 14 - a claim denied by the Pentagon. Lieberman acknowledged that the S-300 systems were already being used in Syria, but only in defense of Russian assets.

The New York state Senate will remain in Republican hands - for now.

"With only 25 days remaining in this year's legislative session, I believe it is my obligation to prevent an unprecedented and uncertain late session political battle that will only hurt my constituents and New Yorkers".

The state Senate will stay in Republican control - at least for the rest of the 2018 session.

"The governor's position is clear: the Democrats must unify to take back the majority." said Cuomo spokeswoman Dani Lever.

Asked if he was rooting for the Democrat or Republican to win in Westchester, Felder said, "I'm not rooting". "This conversation will continue in the morning".

Democratic candidates have outperformed expectations in every special election since President Donald Trump came into office, and it's increasingly looking as if Trump's 2018 nightmare of losing both the House and the Senate in midterm elections could come true. The statement didn't mention Felder by name, but said: "The voters are sick and exhausted of Democrats that empower Trump Republicans".
