Afghan security forces have struggled to combat the Taliban and IS since the US and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation formally concluded their combat role in the country in 2014, shifting to a support and counterterrorism mission. "So far six civilians (have been) killed and 33 wounded".

Fumes can be seen coming from the revenue building in Jalalabad where government forces were battling militants.

A public office in eastern Afghanistan came under an armed attack on Sunday, officials said.

The situation was reported to be tense as at the time of writing a gun battle still going on.

After several hours of fighting which sent plumes of smoke rising into the sky above the accounts office, Attahullah Khogyani, a spokesman for the provincial governor, said Sunday's clash had ended with all the gunmen killed. Some areas of the province are a stronghold of the Islamic State group but Taliban fighters are also active there.

This a developing story.

The Falcon 9 is SpaceX's workhorse, regularly hauling satellites into orbit and supplies to the International Space Station. The much-awaited launch had to be pushed back nearly 24 hours, until the next launching opportunity became available.

The attack, in a busy area of the city with many other official buildings nearby, is the latest in a series that have killed and wounded hundreds in Afghanistan this year and put heavy pressure on the Western-backed government of President Ashraf Ghani.

The Taliban and IS have made clear their intention of disrupting the elections.

The Taliban recently launched their annual spring offensive, in an apparent rejection of a peace overture by the Afghan government.

Their Operation Al Khandaq will target USA forces and "their intelligence agents" as well as their "internal supporters", a Taliban statement said on 25 April.

But the Islamic State group has also stepped up attacks in recent months, particularly in Kabul.

Inamullah Miakhial, spokesman for the Nangarhar hospital, said nine people were killed and more than 35 wounded.
