Margot Kidder, the actress best known for playing Lois Lane opposite Christopher Reeve in the original "Superman" films, has died.

Before she was cast as Lois Lane in 1978's Superman: The Movie, Margot Kidder's acting credits included movies like A Quiet Day in Belfast, Black Christmas and The Great Waldo Pepper, as well as TV shows like Nichols, McQueen and Barnaby Jones.

Margot Kidder, the actress who played Lois Lane opposite Christopher Reeve's Superman, has died.

Co-creator of several Marvel characters, Brian Michael Bendis, remembered the actor and wrote, "I rewatched all the superman the movie extras when we were prepping on powers and Margot Kidder's audition is a flawless moment for the ideal actor".

Born Margaret Ruth Kidder on October 17, 1948 in Canada´s Northwest Territories, she grew up in a small town without a movie theater. The body of 52-year-old actress was found in her home.

She suffered from bipolar disorder and had a nervous breakdown in Los Angeles in 1996. It includes the part in the "Superman" spinoff TV series titled "Smallville" as well as a guest-starring role in the lesbian drama "The L Word". Kidder also acted on stage, including Broadway's 2002 production of "The Vagina Monologues". In 2011 she was arrested while protesting against an oil pipeline at the White House.

Kidder was married and divorced three times. "Who's got you?!" when she first encountered the costumed hero as she and a helicopter plunged from the top of a Metropolis building. Kidder Wednesday actor John Heard in 1979 for six days. Kidder has two grandchildren.

Superman: Red Son author Mark Millar also paid tribute, telling his 103,000 followers: "My Lois Lane has passed away.
