The suspect fired at the officer, who shot back, injuring the gunman.
There is a debate over school resource officers/armed guards at schools. The school resource officer confronted the shooter who then ran out of the school. The police chief did not name the suspect but said he is a former student at Dixon High School, which is about 100 miles west of Chicago.
Dixon police could not comment or confirm if there was a shooting, all they could say is there is no public threat and no threat to students. "At which time, the officer returned fire and struck the suspect".
The suspect was arrested just west of the school and was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. During the pursuit, the suspect fired several shots at the officer but did not strike him. The suspect is receiving medical treatment and is in custody. The officer, who was not identified, was placed on paid administrative leave as is standard in similar cases, according to the chief.
The school resource officer confronted the suspect, who then fled from the school with the officer in pursuit, Howell said.
