Buttler recalled to England Test squad

England v Pakistan: Jos Buttler & Dom Bess included in squad for first Test

Buttler and Bess are surprises in England's Test squad as Vince dropped

England face Pakistan in the first Test at Lord's starting on May 24, before the second encounter at Headingley from June 1.

Buttler, widely regarded as one of the most talented English batsmen of his generation, last played Test cricket when he batted down the order.

"The first thing we talked about as a selection panel - and it coincided with one of my first trains of thought coming into the job - was how could we..."

Buttler, who played the last of his previous 18 Tests in December 2016 but is an inked-in white-ball player for his country, will be back as a specialist batsman - with Jonny Bairstow retaining the wicket-keeping gloves.

Ben Stokes though cleared that he gave all he had during this period for his team and was thankful for everyone at the Royals franchise who supported and played with him during his stint in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The 27-year-old is now playing some of his best cricket in the Indian Premier League.

Bess, meanwhile, was given the nod after fellow Somerset spinner Jack Leach was ruled out of the upcoming series due to a broken left thumb. The selection panel feels that this is the ideal moment to reintroduce Jos to Test cricket, where he has already enjoyed some success, including a stint playing as a specialist batsman at number seven. "Jos is playing with great confidence and flair, and he will bring unique qualities to the Test team", Smith said about Buttler.

While Bess has received an England call after just 16 first-class appearances, Buttler is back in the frame for a 19th cap after a break of nearly 18 months but on the back of his brilliant Indian Premier League form.

20-year-old Bess seemed to have received call-up on the back of his impressive performance in the Champion County match for the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) against Essex in March, when he bagged eight wickets besides scoring a century to help his side come out victorious.

The 20-year-old Bess is likely to make his worldwide debut at the Home of Cricket after Leach's unfortunate injury.
