"It doesn't take long to look at this accident scene to understand how horrific it was and how serious the injuries could be", he added.

Mount Olive Township is about 50 miles west of New York City.

The crash involving the bus and a truck occurred in Mount Olive Township at about 10:20 a.m., authorities said.

A sign outside of the East Brook Middle School in Paramus informed people to go to the auditorium for updates on the accident.

A school bus crashed into a dump truck while on a New Jersey highway on May 17, leaving "at least two people dead", according to ABC News, who has reportedly spoken to law enforcement officials. It's unclear what number of college students have been aboard the bus or the variety of automobiles concerned within the collision.

"There's an incredible emergency response from throughout Morris County and by state police".

"It's a horrific scene", Mount Olive Mayor Rob Greenbaum told The Record.

Police said it is not known how many children were on the bus but they did confirm that several patients were taken to medical centers in the area.

Hackettstown Medical Center had 10 patients from the crash.

Jay Faltings, who drove past the scene approximately five minutes after the crash, told HLN he saw children being rescued from the wreckage, according to CNN. She said they were being evaluated and treated, but she did not have ages or conditions. "But luckily, first responders, everybody there helped get all the kids out safely from what we could see".

A number of ambulances have been dispatched after a college bus and dump truck collided on Interstate 80 in New Jersey on Thursday.

The National Transportation Safety Board said via Twitter that it was "gathering information" on the crash.
