Jose Mourinho hails "unbelievable" Michael Carrick

José Mourinho's assistant manager Rui Faria to leave Manchester United at the end of the season

Jose Mourinho hails "unbelievable" Michael Carrick

The former midfielder was given a huge ovation at Old Trafford as he made his final appearance as a Manchester United player in Sunday's 1-0 defeat of Watford.

He is now focused on his role as a first-team coach, starting with this weekend's match against Chelsea. "I am going to jump on the staff", Carrick explained.

"Of course I have to make the decisions but my assistants have an opinion and he has".

"He has won it all at Real Madrid and won't be fazed by the Premier League".

Addressing the fans, Carrick added: "I'd like to say a massive thank you to everyone for their support over the years, it's been unbelievable. But it is a hard role, you need somebody to talk to because you can't bounce things off people if they're not there". "It changes overnight. I am not training this week".

'Because I've got things, I'm kind of more excited about the future than looking back and being sad that it's over'.

Rui Faria is in the running to be named new Benfica manager after it was announced that he would be leaving Manchester United at the end of this season.

Pliskova attacks umpire's chari after loss
At 5-5 in the match-deciding set, Pliskova overhead smashed a slow-dropping ball for what she assumed was a winning point. But to her astonishment, umpire Marta Mrozinska and the line judge called the ball out.

The 36-year-old did have other options as he approached the end of his playing career but the chance to work under Mourinho was too good to refuse. "However, I have felt for some time that I would like to spend much more quality time with my family before pursuing any new challenge in my professional life". "As soon as this came up I didn't think twice", he said. It's not an issue. "I'm not getting carried away here".

Do great players make great managers?

United do have a couple of academy graduates in Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Axel Tuanzebe, who can slot into the right side of the backline, but judging by Mourinho's experience with youth, the duo could be loaned out for another season at the least to develop their skills. I'm well aware of that. It's an fantastic place to play football.

However, Carrick's association with United will continue as he will join Jose Mourinho's backroom staff this summer.

Carrick - signed for £18m from Tottenham - joined the Red Devils seven months after Keane's departure. Faria has since followed Mourinho across Europe and played a big part in Porto's successful European campaign's from which Mourinho made his name. "I'm sure that will be the case again".

"I have a lot of memories to cherish, some I'll never forget, especially of this place".

"You've got to go step by step", he said.
