The Union home ministry has asked the West Bengal government to provide a detailed report on the violence during the polls as the report the state government had sent was "sketchy", the official said.

Polling was high with as much as 82.13% of the electorate turning up to cast their vote, according to a statement issued by the state election commission.

It accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of bringing in people from Bangladesh, Assam and Jharkhand with the help of Border Security Force personnel on the polling day to create unrest.

The counting of votes is scheduled to take place on Thursday.

Why was re-polling ordered on Wednesday?

Such was the desperation of the ruling party to defeat the Opposition parties in 100 per cent seats, Mr Mannan alleged, that about 34 percent panchayat seats had gone uncontested. Opposition parties demanded re-polling at over 500 booths following the deaths of at least 14 people in violence during the polls on Monday. Two CPI (M) party workers were killed in Nandigram Block-2 in East Midnapore, when miscreants hurled bombs outside a polling booth. At least 24 people were killed in violence during and after the elections. "The number could well have reached 1,500 if the poll officials had factored in other incidents like proxy voting and rigging", he added.

The single-phase rural polls in the state on Monday saw large scale violence and clashes between opposing political outfits throughout the day even as more than 60,000 armed personnel and 80,000 civic volunteers were deployed to guard close to 58,000 polling booths.
