A serious crash between school bus and dump truck on a New Jersey highway has left multiple people injured, according to police.

The bus is on its side on the median and the front end appears to be crushed or ripped off.

The bus was carrying Paramus Middle School students who were on a field trip to Waterloo Village, a historic site in New Jersey.

A red dump truck with severe front end damage was also seen at the scene. Multiple ambulances responded to the scene.

The crash took place around 10:30 a.m. on I-80 westbound near Exit 25 and Route 206. One eastbound lane has since reopened.

Students were reportedly from a middle school in the Paramus school district. "I can only describe it as horrific", Mount Olive Mayor Robert Greenbaum told CBS New York.

"There's an incredible emergency response from throughout Morris County and by state police".

According to USA media, 10 people have been taken to the Hackettstown Medical Center, 10 have been taken to St Clare's Hospital and others have been taken to the Morristown Medical Center. Morristown Medical Center confirmed it was receiving patients but a spokesperson did not know how many were expected to arrive at the hospital. More details as they become available.
