YouTube Red Goes Premium; YouTube Music Becomes Paid, $9.99/Month!

YouTube Red You Tube Premium

YouTube Music officially available for users

The new YouTube Music service is yet another attempt to run parallel to, if not outperform, its rivals.

The advantage of YouTube Music, according to Google, is that the new music service will combine all the official versions of the songs with access to "thousands" - related playlists, remixes, covers, live versions and of course, music videos. Recode detailed the new music service on May 16, claiming it'll be "functionally the same" as the current ones.

Now listen to your favorite music artist, watch Beyonce's Livestream or discover the new music, it's all here, at a single place, YouTube Music. That promotional push is also driven by a need to revive a YouTube brand that's been tarnished by a series of public controversies over inappropriate videos.

The move enables the Google-owned service to separate its paid, premium video plan from the music service, offering a variety of free and paid options.

YouTube's subscription-video service YouTube Red is becoming YouTube Premium and jumping in price to $11.99 a month from $9.99 a month "soon", the company announced today (May 17).

But it's hard to imagine Google keeping two streaming music services alive concurrently beyond the turn of the decade.
