The fissure 8 flow has created a lava delta approximately 190 acres in size, filling Kapoho Bay and shallow reefs along the nearby coastline.

Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim says lava from Kilauea volcano has destroyed more than 600 homes since early last month. The eruption is one of the most destructive in US history, though amazingly no one has been killed and only one injury has been reported.

Hawaii Governor David Ige has signed a memorandum of understanding furnishing millions of dollars in state disaster relief to the island.

More recently a huge river of lava that has crept several miles across the landscape to the eastern tip of the island engulfed two entire seaside housing subdivisions - Kapoho Beach Lots and Vacationland.

The Kilauea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island has been erupting for 33 days.

One of the areas they have been used extensively is in capturing video of the lava flow in the lower East Rift Zone coming from the fissures in Leilani Estates.

The lava's entry into the ocean was also producing laze - a hazardous mix of acidic steam, hydrochloric acid gas and tiny shards of volcanic glass. "Don't forget the farmers, don't forget the ranchers, don't forget all the employees for them".

Officials with the U.S. Geological Survey said Thursday that the lava feeding that flow is still active and there's no way to know when the eruption will end or if more lava-spewing vents will open.

Most of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park remains closed due to persistent earthquakes and eruptions of corrosive volcanic ash.

In addition to property damage, the eruption has severed highways, knocked out power and telephone services and shut down a geothermal plant that usually provides about a quarter of the island's power.
