Putin, Xi Beijing meeting underscores close relationship

On the June 12 summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korea leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore, Bloomberg reported Mr Putin said both Russian Federation and China agreed on the need for peace on the Korean Peninsula.

Freeland said the Russian Federation issue did not come up in any formal way around the G7 tables Friday, although she noted Canada discussed it with allies during bilateral meetings.

Macron called on other G7 leaders not to water down a joint communique at the end of the summit, at the expense of shared values, simply in an effort to win Trump's signature, warning that a "G6 plus one" outcome was possible.

"Prime Minister Trudeau is being so indignant, bringing up the relationship that the USA and Canada had over the many years and all sorts of other things ... but he doesn't bring up the fact that they charge us up to 300 per cent on dairy - hurting our Farmers, killing our Agriculture!"

A spokesman at the Kremlin, Dmitry Peskov, brushed it all off. "There are disagreements with U.S in particular on a number of issues but we've been really realistic about from the very beginning", the government official said.

Russian Federation was removed from the summit in 2014 after its forced annexation of Crimea away from Ukraine. "I am heading for Canada and the G-7 for talks that will mostly center on the longtime unfair trade practised against the United States".

"Look, all of these countries have been taking advantage of the United States on trade", Trump told reporters as he left the White House, repeating his longstanding complaints about trade deficits and tariffs.

President Trump said he expects something will happen on trade, and that it will be positive.

"The introduction, for example, of restrictive tariffs on steel, on aluminum, not only for Europe but also for Canada and Mexico, in essence these are also sanctions..."

He called Canadian PM Justin Trudeau "indignant" and took aim at French President Macron as well.

Frictions over trade tariffs recently imposed by the Trump administration are overshadowing the summit.

Trump said in March that the two leaders would meet soon, but since then already poor ties between Washington and Moscow have deteriorated further over the conflict in Syria and the poisoning of a former Russian spy in Britain. France's finance minister described the group as "far more a G-6 plus one than a G-7".

Trudeau said he and Trump have disagreed over Trump's call for Canada to open up its supply management system, which protects dairy, poultry and eggs farmers, during the hard ongoing renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement. "But Russia should be in the meeting, should be a part of it".

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has predicted the G-7 talks will be heated because of the American stance on trade.

But in a sign of the attempt to lighten the mood, Freeland also said the first leaders' working session with Trump on the state of the world economy was a rich and productive discussion.

European Council President Donald Tusk expressed broad concern about Trump's opposition to the worldwide rules-based order, because it "is being challenged, quite surprisingly, not by the usual suspects but by its main architect and guarantor, the U.S".
