Suicide Rates Increase in Nearly All States

A lot of those states with the highest suicide rates happen to be in the Midwest where there are lower populations and more rural areas.

This week the CDC released new data that shows from 1999 to 2016 suicide rates increased more than 30 percent in 25 states.

NY has the second lowest suicide rates in the country.

Minnesota's rates were up 40 percent, and South Dakota was up 44 percent. Research shows suicide rates are increasing in the United States. Indeed, the report found that more than half of people who died by suicide did not have a diagnosed mental health condition at the time of their death.

One day after the Center for Disease Control declared that suicide was a national problem, another celebrity has died after an apparent suicide.

"Suicide is a leading cause of death for Americans - and it's a tragedy for families and communities across the country", CDC Principal Deputy Director Anne Schuchat said in a statement. Middle-aged adults - ages 45 to 64 - had the largest rate increase. Bourdain's death was also confirmed to be a suicide after his friend and fellow celebrity chef Eric Ripert found him unresponsive in his hotel room in France.

The most common method of suicide involved firearms.

A range of strategies could help prevent suicides, from expanding access to mental and behavioral health care to improving education around individual coping skills and institutional supports, the report says.

Almost 45,000 people committed suicide in 2016, making it one of three leading causes of death on the rise in the United States, along with Alzheimer's disease and drug overdoses.

Developed in Switzerland, the programme is based on the belief that it is more helpful to view suicide as an action taken in order to reach a goal, rather than simply a symptom of mental illness.

"We want people to know they can talk to us and we can help them find healthy alternatives", he said.

If you or anyone you know may be thinking about suicide or is struggling with a crisis of any kind please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

"I think when someone considers suicide they think it's their only option and it's a scary option but the pain they're going through has gotten them to that place", Litovski says.
