"Lyon is announcing that the negotiations with Liverpool and Nabil Fekir for the transfer of the Lyon captain have not succeeded and Lyon have chose to put an end to the negotiations tonight at 8 p.m", the statement read.

However, concerns stemming from a serious knee injury Fekir had suffered while playing for France three years ago had put the brakes on the deal.

France Football Association president Noel Le Graet had suggested the move was nearly completed - according to reports in France - before Lyon's announcement.

Le Graet offered a positive comment for fans fearful that the 24-year-old may not complete his switch to Anfield. "He's in the middle of negotiations and I think it's done", the FFF president said. I spent a quarter of an hour with him this morning [Saturday], and his main focus is France.

"He passed his medical in Clairefontaine".

Reports claim the deal was at a pretty advanced stage - despite Lyon's statement insisting otherwise. That's logical, we've done it for other players.

Liverpool have already made some strong strides in the transfer market this summer, having recruited Fabinho from Monaco on top of the pre-agreed arrival of Naby Keita, and securing Fekir ahead of the World Cup would continue their excellent business.

In a statement released on the French club's official website, Lyon claimed that a breakdown in negotiations have resulted in French global remaining where he is for the time being.

The French global scored 18 goals whilst chipping in with seven assists, ultimately helping Lyon to secure Champions League qualification as well as giving last season's defending champions AS Monaco a run for their money.

More is likely to be known on the matter after France's final World Cup warm-up game against the United States, which the attacking midfielder is set to play a part in.
