Porsche's first all-electric vehicle has been known so far as the Mission E, but the company made the announcement today that the production version of the vehicle will be called the "Taycan". It's an apt title for the freshest model in Porsche's stable. Porsche will begin production of the Taycan-pronounced tai-kan-next year. It's no huge surprise, given in the United States at least cars are still legally required to have two side mirrors using reflective glass. The name may not mean much to us, but according to Porsche, Taycan means "lively young horse".
The company also marked the occasion by revealing a 911 Speedster Concept, an open-top version of its iconic sports auto.
The prancing Taycan isn't short of oomph: its 600-horsepowers can launch it from 0-to-60 mph (96km/h) in under 3.5 seconds, and it should travel over 300 miles on a single charge. Overheating regenerative braking systems are a big area of concern for any performance EV, and if Porsche has nailed that it could give the Taycan a serious edge.
Porsche is talking about a 800-volt system that should allow a charge rate of up to 350 kW, which could charge the vehicle up to 80% in only 15 minutes. Porsche announced the name for its first purely electric series as part of the "70 years of sports cars" ceremony.

In addition to the new name, Porsche doubled down its investment in electrification Friday.
Porsche's first electric vehicle will go on sale in late 2019.
Porsche said it's planning to spend €6 billion on electromobility by 2022. Porsche also says that it has "a continuous power level that is unprecedented among electric vehicles".
Porsche says a new paint shop, a dedicated assembly area, and a conveyor bridge for transporting the painted bodies and drive units to the final assembly area all are now being built. Up until then, Porsche had provided engineering services for auto manufacturers.
