India achieves a new height, discovers new planet

Scientists Discover New Planet'EPIC 211945201 600 Light Years Away at Mount Abu Observatory

Exoplanet

A scientific team lead by Professor Abhijit Chakraborty of Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad has made a remarkable discovery.

The detailed report of ISRO shows that the mass of this sub-Saturn or super-Neptune size planet is 27 times the mass of the Earth. It is some 600 light years away from the Earth. The gravitational pull by any planet caused its sun-like stars to wobble around their common center of mass. The discovery of the planet is important in understanding the formation of similar super-Neptune or sub-Saturn kind of planets, that are too close to the host star, the statement said.

It is time to feel proud as India finds a position in a select group of countries which have discovered planets, stars, heavenly objects and so on. Since the planet revolves around host star EPIC 211945201 or K2-236, it will be known as EPIC 211945201b or K2-236b - ISRO said. According to the researchers, the planets they have discovered could be tens of degrees hotter than the temperature on Earth, because they receive a lot of radiation from their stars, as they orbit close to it.

PARAS was integrated with a 1.2m telescope at PRL's Gurushikhar Observatory in Mount Abu, India.

The atmospheric temperatures around red stars are 3,450 and 3,800 K respectively. "Very few such spectrographs exist around the world (mostly in the U.S. and in the Europe) that can do such precise measurements", the space agency said on its website late on June 8.

Net Neutrality Repeal Ends Chances of Regulations
In January, attorneys general in 22 states and the District of Columbia filed a protective petition for review of the order. That means internet providers can speed up, slow down or block websites without violating federal regulations.

Specifically, the PARAS made it possible for the scientists to measure how planet EPIC correlates to the amplitude produced when its host star responds to its orbit.

In a discovery by NASA, it was said that the NASA's Kepler satellite has discovered three Earth-like planets has been found.

Scientists now hope to use further observations - from the new James Webb Space Telescope - to understand more about the planets' atmospheres.

However, calculations suggest that the heavy elements, ice, silicates, and iron content are 60-70 % of the total mass. As this system is reported to feature three rocky planets that are the same size as Earth, astronomers are taking notice.
