The Treasury Department said Monday it has sanctioned three Russian individuals and five firms for using submarines to undermine USA cybersecurity.

"The entities designated today have directly contributed to improving Russia's cyber and underwater capabilities through their work with the FSB [Federal Security Service] and therefore jeopardise the safety and security of the United States and our allies", Mr Mnuchin said in a statement on Monday.

All three individuals added to the SDN list have been targeted by the U.S. sanctions due to their links to the Divetechnoservice Company, the Russian diving-equipment producer, according to the Treasury.

Three individuals and five Russian businesses have been placed on the sanctions list by the US Treasury for having provided material and technological support to the Federal Security Service (FSB). These sanctions also target Russia's tracking of underwater communications in order to eavesdrop on world wide communications. The individuals named on Monday all had ties to Divetechnoservices: Aleksandr Lvovich Tribun, Oleg Sergeyevich Chirikov and Vladimir Yakovlevich Kaganskiy.

According to the US Treasury, the individuals had been involved in the destructive NotPetya cyber attack which devastated computers in Ukraine and across Europe past year. Trump has repeatedly denied there was any collusion and Russian Federation has said it did not meddle in the election.

According to the Treasury Department, the company won a contract in 2011 to buy a $1.5 million submersible craft for the FSB.
