"We have taken a decision, it is untenable for BJP to continue in alliance with PDP in Jammu & Kashmir, hence we are withdrawing", BJP National General Secretary RAM Madhav said in a press conference in Delhi.
"Governor N.N. Vohra may look for an alternative coalition but that is almost impossible unless the People's Democratic Party (PDP) breaks from within to support the other two opposition parties", Valley-based political science professor Noor Ahmed Baba told ThePrint.
Sources say that the alliance had nearly ended in 2016 too when the Valley had witnessed a prolonged period of violence and unrest after killing of Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani in an encounter with security forces.
It cited the killing of influential Kashmiri journalist Shujaat Bukhari last week to make its point. If not now, the split would have happened six months later but the situation presented the BJP the flawless opportunity to pull out of the alliance.

While Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader M.Y. Tarigami said both the PDP and BJP were answerable to the people for sending the state into a "deep crisis", his attack was more focused on the BJP.

In sharp contrast to the BJP, the PDP has been seen as a pro-Kashmir party.
Mehbooba said her party's objective was reconciliation in Jammu and Kashmir through dialogue, confidence building measures and good relations with Pakistan.

Forming a government will require the support of 44 of the 89 legislators in the state assembly.
