The 28-nation EU was first expected to do so only next month but EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom said they would introduce "rebalancing" tariffs on about 2.8 billion euros' ($3.4 billion) worth of U.S. products this week.

The EU has said its retaliatory tariffs on United States goods will kick-in from Friday - six weeks after America slapped import duties on the bloc's steel and aluminium products.

Canada has announced it will impose retaliatory tariffs on C16.6 billion ($12.5 billion) worth of US exports from July 1.

American exports including jeans, motorbikes and bourbon whiskey will be slapped with new levies on Friday, EU trade commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom said.

After months of talks, the Trump administration ended in June a temporary two-month exemption for the European Union as well as Mexico and Canada, all of which have retaliated or plan to do so soon.

Donald Trump hit the EU, Canada and Mexico with tariffs of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum at the start of June, ending exemptions that had been in place since March. Mexico put tariffs on American products ranging from steel to pork and bourbon two weeks ago.

Mexico has already put tariffs on US products that include steel and pork.

The EU said that if the situation isn't resolved, or if the USA responds with more tariffs, the EU said that it will add additional tariffs on 160 US products worth $4.3 billion.
