Rapper XXXTentacion was shot and killed during an apparent robbery in Broward County in Florida in the USA, police said.

"The adult male victim has been confirmed as 20 year old Jahseh Onfroy, aka rapper #XXXTentacion", the sheriff's department said in a posting on Twitter.

Authorities in Florida say they're searching for two suspects in the fatal shooting of rapper-singer XXXtentacion.

TMZ reported that officials have pronounced him dead.

The Broward Sheriff's Office tweeted about the shooting, stating that "dispatchers received a call of a shooting at 3:57 p.m" and "an adult male victim was transported to an area hospital".

XXXTentacion had a troubled upbringing and was expelled from middle school for fighting, but he channelled his energy and fury into music, according to a BBC report.

The 20-year-old rapper was shot dead outside a motorcycle store in Deerfield Beach, Florida, confirmed The Hollywood Reporter. He was facing 15 felony charges at the time of his death, including false imprisonment, witness tampering and aggravated battery of a pregnant woman.

The rapper's music made waves last month after Spotify announced it would scrub his tracks from its platform, as his alleged behavior had violated codes of conduct.

Tributes have quickly poured in on social media from Kanye West and rapper Sean "Diddy" Combs among other hip-hop heavyweights.
