Trump administration officials quickly disputed a Washington Post story Thursday, which reported they would stop prosecuting migrant parents who cross the border unauthorized with their children, the latest confusing development relating to the president's zero-tolerance immigration policy.

"She wanted to see everything for herself", said Stephanie Grisham, the first lady's communications director.

Speaking during a press conference, Trump said she was eager to see the children and learn more about the process.

Later, she toured a section of the facility where the children have bedrooms and was told they maintain their own rooms.

Melania Trump has gone on a damage-control mission near the Texas border with Mexico, visiting children displaced by the country's immigration crisis and showing a softer side than the hardline policies of her husband, US President Donald Trump. She said the executive order is a small step in the right direction but a lot of work is needed.

The president has said previously that he wants to change the Senate's rules to eliminate the filibuster, and allow passage of all bills on a simple-majority vote.

The Trump administration will no longer require immediate court proceedings for undocumented adults who cross the USA border illegally with their children, according to a report issued Thursday. Trump's executive order suggests the government intends to hold the families indefinitely by challenging a 1997 court ruling known as the Flores Settlement, which places a 20-day limit on how long children, alone or with their parents, can be detained.

The Trump administration's policy that effectively separated families crossing the U.S. border has held up a big, glaring mirror to America's moral character.

White House officials said they are working to reunite almost 2,300 children already separated from their parents. "But we need Congress to act". She told the children to "be kind and nice to each other".

Trump visited New Hope Children's Shelter in McAllen, Texas, which houses 55 children, six of whom were separated from their families, the rest unaccompanied.

"The safety of Americans and the security of our nation require that people who illegally cross our border are not simply released into the United States", McConnell said in the statement.

This week, President Trump signed an executive order reversing the policy after days of double talk from administration officials and the President himself.
