On Sunday, Travis Pastrana, vehicle racer and motorcycle daredevil, recreated three stunts in Las Vegas originally done by his idol, Evel Knievel, one of which nearly killed Knievel in the process. The stunts air live Sunday as part of "Evel Live" beginning at 8 p.m. EST on the History Channel.
Daredevil Travis Pastrana has successfully replicated three of Evel Knievel's motorcycle jumps.
He concluded the event by jumping 149 feet to clear the fountains at Caesars Palace hotel and casino, which was attempted by Knievel in 1967.
Pastrana, dressed in a white leather suit adorned with stars and stripes as an homage to the late Knievel (who died in 2007 aged 69), said it was "an honour to live a day in Evel's boots".
"Man, it's been such an honor and been an awesome career". Pastrana will look to jump 52 crushed cars to outdo the legend. "I'm not done yet, but this was definitely the coolest thing I've ever been able to do". The other two jumps I had enough time to hit my marks exactly flawless.
Taiwan says two US warships pass through Taiwan Strait
Two United States warships entered the Taiwan Strait on Saturday at a time of heightened tensions between Washington and Beijing. Although the USA does not have formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan, it is its most powerful ally and top arms supplier.
Next up will be a re-creation of Knievel's 1975 bus jump - only Pastrana will attempt to clear 16 Greyhounds to his predecessor's 14. "To be here in Las Vegas, so much of my history has been here".
"This is all about Evel, and the coolest thing about this whole thing, all of Evel's family is out here", said Pastrana.
Last is the fountain jump, the one that left Knievel with a crushed pelvis, broken left hip, right ankle, hands and wrists, in a coma for 29 days. "This is the home of the most iconic jump, one of the most iconic events that has ever gone down. It's not the longest jump, but by far the hardest".
After finishing with a few burnouts, Pastrana celebrated his triplicating feat by diving into the fountain.
