Israel said on Monday it was closing the Gaza Strip's main commercial crossing and limiting the Palestinian coastal enclave's fishing zone in a crackdown targeting Hamas Islamists whom it blames for border protests now in their fourth month.
In a meeting with Fatah Party leaders on Sunday, Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas declared that he would not stop paying salaries to convicted terrorists and their families, despite new Israeli legislation withholding funds in the amount paid to killers and attackers from taxes collected for the P.A.
Emad al-Efranji, the manager of Al-Quds TV in Palestine, said Israel wants to silence the media, as part of its campaign to hide its crimes against the Palestinian people.
The move, which will come into effect on Tuesday, will only allow for the transfer of humanitarian needs such as cooking gas as well as wheat and flour into Gaza, an official responsible for coordinating the movement of cargo through the border confirmed to Al Jazeera from Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the decision to shut down the border was taken in coordination with the country's defense minister. He also says Tel Aviv will take additional steps but did not give any details.
"Should this situation continue, the measures will stay in place and intensify", it said. Gaza's economy relies on the local fishing industry for income.
