IL woman harassed for Puerto Rico flag shirt, officer who didn't help put on desk dutyThe Cook County State's Attorney's Office said Timothy Trybus, 62, has been charged with two counts of felony hate crime. Officers later said he appeared intoxicated.
A police officer who allegedly failed to intervene in an argument between a man and a woman over the woman's Puerto Rico flag shirt has resigned, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
In the viral clip a white man approaches her and demands to know why she is wearing her shirt, which had "Puerto Rico" written on it. "He resigned late today, but this isn't where our work ends".
As for Trybus, he was released on bond and has a court appearance scheduled on August 1.
Supt Randall said that Ms Irizarry deserved to be praised for her response amid a national trend of "racially charged, abusive incidents we're seeing throughout the country".
The Forest Preserves of Cook County had previously said the officer had been placed on desk duty as it investigated the incident. The man resumes his abuse, saying: "You're not American, if you were American you wouldn't wear that".

Irizarry (pictured) posted a Facebook Live video as the man, who was drunk, repeatedly came up to her and yelled 'Why is she wearing that s**t?' The Tribune said these are "enhancements" on prior charges of misdemeanor assault and disorderly conduct.

Almost half of Americans are unaware that Puerto Ricans are United States citizens, according to polling taken after the island was rocked by a hurricane last September. Meanwhile an investigation into the incident continues despite the officer's resignation.
In it Irizarry pleads for help as a man harasses her, saying her shirt is un-American. They also said that more officers responded and arrested Trybus when the first officer asked for assistance on the radio.
"OK, OK", Ms Irizarry says, trying to placate him.
"You are not going to change us, you know that, right?"
Mr Trybus continued to harangue Ms Irizarry for about 10 minutes before other officers arrived and arrested him. In the background, a police officer is standing outside the park pavilion.
Puerto Rico is a U.S. commonwealth with its own constitution. Puerto Rican residents have been American citizens since 1917 and have the right to vote in USA presidential primaries but not in presidential elections.
The incident was condemned by Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello, who said he was "appalled, shocked and disturbed" by the officer's behavior.
