The most followed Bollywood celebrities on Twitter namely- Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone are amongst the many famous personalities who have lost out on over Three lakh followers.

On Wednesday, Vijaya Gadde, Twitter's head of legal, policy, trust and safety, said the company would begin removing "locked accounts from follower counts across profiles globally". The president now has 53.1 million followers, according to his account page.

Twitter said it expects the initiative to reduce the total follower count on the platform by a significant 6%, the Times reports.

"As a result, the number of followers displayed on many profiles may go down".

In January, New York's chief prosecutor said the state had launched an investigation into a company, which allegedly sold millions of fake followers to social media users.

These users are different to spam or bots, explained Gadde, because it is unclear if the original account owner still has control or access to it. Twitter locks accounts when they display a sudden change of behaviour, like sending lots of unsolicited replies.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump (@realDonaldTrump), possibly Twitter's most controversial major user, saw his follower count drop by about 300,000, from 53.4 million to 53.1 million, on Thursday. Shah Rukh Khan lost nearly 3.5 lakh followers (35.7 million) while Amitabh Bachchan registered an even bigger loss, at over 4 lakh (34.5 million).
