Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren has had his fair share of critics, but on Wednesday, he played a key role in his country's 2-1 extra-time win over England in the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation.

"You don't have to be a strapping lad to play football", said Modric. Should they upset the odds and win, Croatia would be the smallest country to lift the gold trophy since Uruguay in 1950.

On his own recipe for success, Modric said: "I've been through a lot in life and I learnt never to surrender".

Former Real Madrid and Brazil playmaker Kaka has lauded Croatia captain Luka Modric ahead of the World Cup final. The players never gave up. Federation Internationale de Football Association fined several Swiss players, also ethnic Albanians, who made pro-Albania symbols with their hands in a comeback win over Serbia in the group stage. "I would be happy if Luka won the Golden Ball".

Formidable France secure second title
FRANCE 0, DENMARK 0 : Both sides knock it around for 90 minutes knowing a draw means France wins the group and Denmark is second. Croatia came close to a second equalizer three minutes after thew restart when Lloris tipped Ante Rebic's drive over the bar.

T-shirts with the caption "Croatia World Cup winners - Russian Federation 2018", are on sale, while waiters in a Zagreb bar have been "drawing" portraits of Croatian players on the froth of coffees.

We will remind, the French team became the world champion, beating in the final Croatia.

There were no questions during a 27-minute news conference with Modric and coach Zlatko Dalic about the criminal case that has clouded Croatian soccer, however. Not far from the stadium, the World Cup Fan Zone perched overlooking the city was reportedly closed after reaching capacity. On the pitch, Vida has made the most interceptions of any Croatian in Russian Federation, with his basic approach - making two more clearances than any team-mate against England - setting him apart. Questioned by authorities previous year over his testimony in Mamic's trial, he said simply: "My conscience is clear". After going down a goal, the Croats steadily grew stronger, controlling the game and beating opponents to the ball as if they were the ones with fresh legs, finally getting the victor in extra time.
