France: Night of Violence, Riots and Looting After World Cup Win

"Eternal Happiness" read Monday's headline in French sports daily L'Equipe, summing up the mood of many who hope the euphoria will last for months - even years.

The Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens (RATP) group responsible for running the lines have tweaked the names of six stations across the city after Les Bleus lifted the trophy in Russian Federation on Sunday afternoon.

Captain Hugo Lloris, flanked by coach Didier Deschamps, was the first to emerge from the aircraft, raising the famed golden trophy before heading down the stairs and onto a freshly laid red carpet.

Hours after the nation's football team clinched the World Cup in Russian Federation, elation was replaced by an eruption of violence and rioting on the streets of France that left two people dead and saw more than 500 people arrested. The French, though, are more enamored of the players and of their coach, Didier Deschamps.

This morning's win sees France win football's biggest prize for the first time since 1998.

"We're the champions of the world!".

France's victorious World Cup players will all be awarded the Legion of Honour, the office of President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday ahead of their evening visit to the Elysee Palace. "Encore!" said Liberation, alongside a picture of the team holding the trophy.
