Several tornadoes tore through Iowa on Thursday, including one that sent six people to the hospital with injuries, officials said.

As the tornado left Marshalltown past Altoona, Prairie City and Colfax, funnel clouds have been reported across Iowa.

Several homes in Bondurant, Iowa were damaged as the roof of one home was torn off and another home was damaged after an RV flipped against it.

McFarland Clinic posted on Facebook the Marshalltown Main Street building was damaged, but there are no reports of injuries to patients or staff in the building.

On Friday Alliant Energy was working to restore electricity to almost 6,400 customers in the Marshalltown area, which appeared to have been hit the hardest Thursday afternoon.

A tornado has caused brick walls to collapse into streets, ripped roofs off buildings and blown a cupola off the top of a historic court house in the central Iowa city of Marshalltown. The National Weather Service relayed reports of "catastrophic damage", with overturned vehicles and tops of buildings "gone".

Johnson says survey teams are examining damage in Marshalltown and other locations where the tornadoes hit to determine the tornadoes' strength.

A tornado slammed into an agricultural machinery plant in Iowa as some people were working on Thursday and police said a number of people were taken to a local hospital.

Reynolds added that in Marshalltown, the state is providing a communications trailer and workers to help maintain emergency communications there.

Alliant Energy says more than 5,800 customers remained without power in Marshalltown Friday. Officials said citizens coming to Marshalltown to view the damage are hampering the efforts.

The City of Marshalltown declared a State of Emergency around 6 p.m.

"It didn't look like tornadic supercells were possible", Krull said. Smith said much of downtown was damaged.

Pella Regional Health Center spokeswoman Billie Rhamy said seven people injured at the Vermeer plant were treated at the hospital. The governor credited the company's security team with moving them all to safety. "It's just an absolute mess".
