"She approached me and she just asked me to call 911". An autopsy on Hussain was expected Tuesday.

Kozis was a synchronized swimmer who swam last season with the Markham Synchro Club as a 10 and under competitive athlete.

Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti said Markham has been shaken by the senseless act of violence and the city would lower its flags to honour young Julianna.

The authorities have not yet determined a motive for the attack that took place in Toronto's bustling Greektown neighborhood around 10:00 pm Sunday.

Two people were killed and 13 others injured in the shooting. She had recently graduated from high school and was preparing to study nursing at Hamilton's McMaster University in the fall.

The Gunman is identified by the police as Faisal Hussain, a 29-year-old man.

Meanwhile, the Toronto neighbourhood shattered by the shooting began showing signs of recovery with customers flocking back to businesses that opened their doors Tuesday, vowing not to let the attack days earlier change their impressions of the lively community.

Sinha said the association condemns Hussain's actions, but said discussing them exclusively in the context of his mental illness risks doing other patients a disservice. "We may never know what was going on in his mind".

Life in the area had largely come to a halt after Hussain fired indiscriminately at pedestrians and restaurant patrons on Sunday night and reminders of the weekend violence were still in evidence. "We will mourn those who were lost for the rest of our lives". "The bullet grazed (me) and I thought I was hit".

"He got released from hospital and he's on crutches", Kilanis said.

"When he comes around six o'clock, seven o'clock, I say, 'Faisal, who is cooking? It could have been worse".

At another just steps away, people gathered at a fountain to leave flowers, notes and candles as well as messages written in chalk.

Anthony Parise, who taught Fallon's Grade 12 English class, remembered her as "a leader among her peers" who planned to become a nurse.

"He would talk about beating up his mom", she said.

"He smiled - like big smile, white teeth, whenever he saw me".

But nothing helped mitigate Faisal Hussain's mental health issues, his relatives said.

"Right now we need to focus on respecting the family's wishes for privacy as they deal with a disgusting loss", Mayor Frank Scarpitti said on Wednesday. Neighbours and friends described him as quiet but mild-mannered and always polite.

"They've been through a lot", Sukhera said. "When I heard this is what happened, I can't put two and two together". So I didn't think there was anything wrong with him.

Ashley Robinson, who lived on the floor above Hussain's apartment, saw him almost every day and had a similar experience.

"The people here are very friendly and it's a very loving community", said Marlene Julien. He recalled, however, that Hussain prided himself on working to support his relatives.

Loblaw's confirmed that Hussain had worked as a part-time store employee, but declined to provide further details.

Aamir Sukhera said he was a close family friend of Hussain's.
