Most people who are bitten by an infected mosquito either have no symptoms or have temporary, flu-like symptoms while others contract a much more severe illness.
"The recent wet and increasing hot weather has created the ideal conditions for the Culex mosquito that carries West Nile Virus", Mark E. Wallace, Executive Director of the Weld County Health Department wrote in a release.

In Maryland, there were five reported cases of West Nile a year ago, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They can include fever, headache, nausea and vomiting, but most people don't develop any symptoms at all.
Despite the low numbers of nuisance mosquitoes this summer, the numbers of infected Culex tarsalis continue to increase.
"With high levels of [West Nile Virus] in mosquitoes and the recent rains leading to even more mosquitoes, it's important for residents of Fairfax County to take precautions to protect themselves and their families", the Fairfax County Health Department said in a news release.
Officials also recommend dumping out standing water that can collect in old tires, planters, buckets, toys, flowerpots, trash cans and birdbaths.
Those most at risk for serious complications are people older than 50 and people with suppressed immune systems.
