'I go way back with Rosie and that's not the Roseanne I know.
Newman added that the character is "clearly" someone "with a conservative viewpoint".
"I visualize to the audience and I tell them ahead of time, I'm going to be saying these and I know they're offensive to you - let's decide why they're offensive and who's making that decision", he said. "Of course, that could change during the season, but there are no plans at this time".
Last Man Standing was canceled a year ago by ABC after six successful seasons and picked up by Fox in May. "We just think it's a really amusing show" with general appeal. "Whatever's good for his business and good for the state of Colorado, the policies and stuff, he's going to go with [that]", he said.
When asked if there was any concern about how much time has passed since FOX picked up the show from ABC, Newman said he believes "it's still pretty fresh in peoples' minds".
The final season of "Last Man Standing" averaged almost 6 million weekly viewers, more than some other ABC series that were brought back, including "black-ish", "Shark Tank" and "The Goldbergs".

In a follow-up interview, Newman said he doesn't "anticipate" the show being "more political" than when it was on ABC.
"Last Man Standing" isn't rushing to pick up the "Roseanne" pro-Trump mantle when it starts life at its new network this fall.
"I don't know what Roseanne [meant]", he added, "but that's not the woman I know". "My whole thing with ABC, I've worked with ABC for years. We know we're going to have tremendous material to promote it with because that show, joke for joke, is I think, as amusing as any show on TV".
His fellow executive producer, Matt Berry, said "Last Man Standing" and "Roseanne" can't really be compared.
Last Man Standing has been one of the odder television stories from this past year. But this year while axing New Girl and completely restructuring its live-action comedy lineup, Fox made the surprising move of picking up the newly dead series for a seventh season.
Last Man Standing returns Friday, Sept. 27 at 8/7c on Fox. Last Man Standing always felt more like a Fox show anyway.
The show will premiere on Fox on September 28.
