Earthquake Hits Indonesia’s Lombok and Bali Island

7.0 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Indonesia a Week After Another Deadly Temblor

Rescuers used diggers and heavy machinery to clear debris and search for survivors on Monday after a magnitude 6.9 natural disaster killed at least 98 people on Indonesia's resort island of Lombok, prompting a tourist exodus. Ensure you have your policy number to hand.

The quake was felt for several seconds in Bali, where people ran out of buildings.

"Our hearts go out to those affected and who have lost loved ones".

The Garuda Indonesia airline said it was adding extra flights from Lombok to help tourists leave.

Videos showed screaming people running in panic from a shopping mall and a neighbourhood in Bali where parked vehicles swayed.

The third reason is that the houses' structures are not firm enough, lacking reinforced steel bars and a solid foundation", said Suardi, an official in the northern area of the Lombok Island.

The quake, initially reported to be of 7.0-magnitude before the U.S. Geological Service downgraded it to a 6.9, struck the island of Lombok-a popular spot with tourists-where last week's natural disaster also hit.

Soldiers have pulled a man alive from the rubble of a large mosque flattened by an quake, killing at least 105 people on the Indonesian island of Lombok, while thousands of homeless villagers waited for aid on Tuesday and stranded tourists camped at beaches and in the lobbies of damaged hotels. Thousands of homes and buildings were damaged and those displaced camped wherever they could - in sports fields and on roadsides, cobbling together ramshackle shelters and building campfires for warmth.

"We just witnessed one of the boats get completely overfilled with tourists climbing on, with the officials trying to keep them back off the boat, pushing them and shoving them".

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said the New Zealand Embassy in Jakarta was working to get more information following today's quake on the island.

Aftershock at 5.9-magnitude strikes Indonesian island days after natural disaster
Indonesia's disaster agency says the death toll from the quake that shook Lombok island Sunday evening has risen to 131. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the latest quake at 5.9, with a depth of 10 km (6 miles).

"We will evacuate people off of the three Gili islands".

National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said there were no fatalities among tourists on the three islands Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air.

Muhammad Faozal, the head of West Nusa Tenggara's tourism agency, said there were about 1,200 mostly foreign tourists on the Gilis.

Singapore's Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam, who was in Lombok for a security conference when the quake struck, described on Facebook how his hotel room on the 10th floor shook violently.

Like Bali, Lombok is known for pristine beaches and mountains.

"Everyone's a bit shaken but all well".

The tremors initially sparked tsunami fears as model Chrissy Teigen - who is on holiday in nearby Bali with husband John Legend - recounted her terror to her 10.6 million Twitter followers.

"We tried to go to the airport but there was no taxi, no transport, no plan for evacuation", French tourist Jina told Metro TV.

She live tweeted the quake to her 10.6m followers.
