Lombok was hit by another natural disaster on Thursday, the third in little over a week, causing panic and damage to buildings. "Telecommunications access will facilitate people and their families to communicate and update each other on their conditions", said Larry Ridwan, CEO of Net1 Indonesia.

"In some villages we visited the destruction was nearly 100 percent, all houses collapsed, roads are cracked and bridges were broken", said Arifin Muhammad Hadi, a spokesman for the Indonesian Red Cross. Tens of thousands are now sleeping out in the open or in the ruins of their homes.

Nugroho said the highest number of victims was from North Lombok District, reaching 273 people, West Lombok (26), East Lombok (11), Mataram City (seven), Central Lombok (two) and Denpasar City (two). There are growing concerns that the important tourism industry will be badly hit at what should be a busy time.

Wiranto said the government will develop a plan to rebuild communities on Lombok, which like its more famous neighbour Bali is a popular tourist destination with powder-white beaches, mountains and a lush interior.

"We've lost a lot of bookings and future guests are in wait-and-see mode".

Indonesia, located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, is an area of great seismic and volcanic activity, and is shaking each year by some 7,000 telluric movements of varying intensity. A road near Mount Rinjani, an active volcano, has been badly damaged.
