Rescues work among the debris of the collapsed Morandi highway bridge in Genoa, Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2018.

Tedeschi said the part of the bridge that collapsed was about 80 meters (yards) in length.

The vehicles plunged 79m (260ft) from the bridge into an industrial area below. He said they were still trying to figure out the reason for the collapse. He said no residences were involved.

The initial hypothesis, as report Italian media, is that the bridge suffered a structural failure partially because of the storm in the area.

Rixi said it is "the biggest tragedy involving a bridge of this importance in Europe in the last decades".

It crumbled over a river, railroad tracks and buildings. It is a major thoroughfare, linking central Genoa with Genoa airport and towns along the coast to the west of the city.

The office of Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said he was heading to Genoa in the evening and would remain there on August 15.

"These tragedies can not happen in a civilised country like Italy".

The day marks the high point of the Italian summer holiday season when most cities and business are closed and Italians head to the beaches or the mountains, which means traffic was heavier than usual on the Genoa highway.

A motorway bridge collapsed on Tuesday over the northern Italian port city of Genoa, killing dozens of people according to the local ambulance service, in what the transport minister said was likely to be "an vast tragedy".

ANSA says five people have been hospitalised in life-threatening conditions. The Interior Ministry press office could not immediately confirm the fatalities.

"Firefighters are working together and teams of rescuers and police sniffer dogs have been mobilized", emergency services said on Twitter.

By early afternoon, about 200 firefighters were on the scene, and government officials were en route. Restructuring was carried out in 2016. Local police and figure brigade officials said that no injuries or deaths had been reported so far, according to news agency Reuters.

Authorities had no information regarding the number of potential victims.
