The King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, and special envoys from the South Asian neighbours led the diplomatic delegation at the funeral of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in New Delhi on Friday.

"Besides, as the three-time prime minister of India, Vajpayee's leadership greatly contributed to the prosperity and stability of India, and the country attained steady economic growth and became a leader in information technology", Sial said.

Vajpayee served as prime minister briefly in 1996 then again from 1998 to 2004. "Those who remember his state visit to the United Kingdom in 2001 will know how well respected he was here", said a Twitter post by Mark Fields, British Minister of State for Asia and the Pacific.

A poet-politician, Vajpayee was one of the most popular leaders of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

"A Bharat Ratna who was also conferred with the Bangladesh Liberation War Honour!" Chief ministers, including Yogi Adityanath, Nitish Kumar, Shivraj Singh Chauhan and Vijay Rupani also attended the funeral.

"The government and people of Pakistan extend their heartfelt condolences to his family and to the government and people of India", it added.
