Strong natural disaster jolts Indonesian island of Lombok

No injuries or damage were immediately reported.

The quake struck 64 km (40 miles) from the city of Mataram with a population of 400,000 people, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reports.

Residents said the tremor was felt strongly to the east of the island, and sent people fleeing into the streets.

'I was driving to deliver aid to evacuees when suddenly the electricity pole was swaying.

"The quake caused people to panic and flee their homes", the national disaster agency spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told local media.

It comes two weeks after a 6.9-magnitude quake in the same area, in which more than 400 people have died.

The tremor was also felt in the island's capital Mataram and on the neighbouring resort island of Bali.

Lombok suffered damage running to more than 5 trillion rupiah ($342 million) from the August 5 natural disaster, authorities said last week, putting the death toll at more than 430.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and is regularly hit by earthquakes.

The quake which struck in the past hour, is not expected to trigger a tsunami as it is too deep.
