Amazon follows Apple to cross trillion-dollar milestone

Amazon shares were last up 1.1 percent at $2,035.69, pulling back slightly from the milestone level of $2050.2677. Most notable was the speed with which Amazon hit the milestone, with its shares having more than tripled in the past three years.

Amazon has become the second company listed in the USA to achieve a market value of $1trn (£779.3bn). on September 4 became the second USA company to reach $1 trillion in stock market value, just weeks after Apple hit the same milestone on August 2. It's book value is now greater than that of every stock listed in all but 13 countries, including those of Taiwan, Spain, and Italy, according to the CIA's World Factbook.

As of writing, Amazon's market cap is sitting pretty at $994.75 billion; it's nearly a certainty that the company's valuation will top $1 trillion again relatively soon.

More than 40 percent said they buy something on Amazon once a month or more often. By early afternoon, Amazon's stock was trading at $2,030 per share, up less than 1 percent, putting its market cap at $990 billion. "Now that it has several high-margin revenue streams, we're seeing those doubts subside". Amazon Web Services, for instance, a unit that provides hosting and cloud computing for other businesses, brought in $20 billion (R305 billion) of revenue in 2017.

"The difference between the two is that Amazon has room to grow within its two main businesses".

Amazon's astronomical growth from a small Seattle bookseller into one of the world's biggest companies has made its founder and chief executive, Jeff Bezos, easily the richest person in the world; as of Tuesday, the 54-year-old was worth more than $166 billion, according to Bloomberg's billionaires index.

'The company continues to experiment with new products and push into new geographies.
