He said that earlier this year he changed Samsung's mobile research and development organization and product planning to prepare for the shift. Some rumors have suggested Samsung's device would launch at Mobile World Congress in February.
A new type of foldable smartphone from Samsung may get revealed before the end of 2018. Consumer surveys conducted by Samsung showed there was a market demand for foldable smartphones, and "it's time to deliver".
"When you need to browse or see something, then you may need to unfold it", Koh said at IFA in Berlin last week. However, issues like dust collection within the folds and the strength are still issues that need to be dealt with.
Instead of introducing new technology into the flagship Galaxy S and Note series of devices, Koh said Samsung will look to bring in cutting-edge features to its cheaper models first. For Europe, Justin Rose, Henrik Stenson and Alex Noren shot 66s, while man of the moment Bryson DeChambeau shot 67. The 29-year-old recovered with a birdie on the last to ensure a share of the opening-round spoils with Woods.
Samsung's long-awaited foldable phone is getting ready for primetime, and could very well steal the thunder away from Apple's iPhone XS. Meanwhile, Samsung plans to pack its mid-tier devices with new tech to sell strongly to "millennials" it is reported.
Koh didn't say when the foldable phone would actually be available to buy, though he has previously thrown out vague hints that it could be this year or 2019. However, he suggested that more details would be revealed at the Samsung Developer Conference scheduled for November 7 and 8.
He further revealed that users will be able to do most of the tasks when the tablet is in the folded state but they will have to unfold it for browsing or seeing something else. Crucially though, the two parts will be the same display rather than two separate displays that we've seen in some devices in the past. The foldable Galaxy device, although complicated to develop and manufacture, is expected to make its debut at the Samsung Developer Conference some time around November 2018.
