Rep. Richard E. Neal easily beat back progressive challenger Tahirah Amatul-Wadud, a civil rights lawyer who had attracted some national attention.

The 7th district primary results should encourage all campaigns to better incorporate and engage people of color, those who speak English as a second language and young people who often feel like their vote doesn't matter.

Another veteran congressman, Democratic Rep. Richard Neal, faced a spirited primary challenge from Tahirah Amatul-Wadud, a black attorney from Springfield who, if elected, would be the first Muslim to serve in Congress from MA. Elizabeth Warren in November.

Pressley was backed by state Attorney General Maura Healey and was also endorsed by The Boston Globe, who called her "the future of the Democratic Party". Pressley, Ocasio-Cortez and newly minted Florida governor nominee Andrew Gillum are all liberals on the more activist end of the spectrum - a reflection of what the Democratic Party base wants right now.

Ayanna Pressley reacts as she hears the news she has ousted 10-term Democrat Michael Capuano to win her primary in MA. "If I find two or three or ten candidates who do, then I look for the person who can actually deliver on the words", he said at a recent event with canvassers.

"I thought if she could get 40 percent here then it wouldn't be enough of a firewall for him to overcome her Boston lead", said Green. "Ayanna Pressley is going to be a good congresswoman and MA will be well-served".

Pressley joins a growing slate of minority women Democrats running in the November 6 congressional elections, including New York's Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who scored a similar upset over a longtime incumbent, and Minnesota state Representative Ilhan Omar, set to become the first Muslim woman elected to Congress. Other progressive candidates, including Cimbrelo, had hoped to pull an Ocasio-Cortez-style upset Tuesday night.

Since she will not face a Republican opponent during the November midterm elections, Pressley is poised to become the first non-white person (male or female) to represent MA in Congress.

"She saw an opportunity there in the numbers, and she chose not to do as many aspiring candidates are told to do, to sit and wait her turn", he said.

Her competitor also had nice words about her: "Ayanna Pressley is going to be a good congresswoman, and I will tell you that Massachussets will be well served".

The race was just one of a slate of contested primaries in MA on Tuesday. Wu, a programmer and video-game designer who rose to prominence after she became the target of threats and online attacks for calling out misogyny in the gaming community, had called for single-payer health care, a guaranteed minimum income and other progressive initiatives.

"It seems like change is on the way", said Pressley to raucous applause at her election night party. The former mixologist, who's more than a little shaky when it comes to basic economics, beat Crowley liked a rented mule while appealing to race, securing almost 60 percent of the vote.

Pressley, who previously worked as a senior aide for well-known Dems, Congressman Joseph P. Kennedy II, and Sen.

In the governor's race, incumbent Republican Charlie Baker is being challenged by minister Scott Lively while Democrats Jay Gonzalez and Robert Massie are competing for their party's nomination.
