The Kern County Sheriff's Office says a husband and wife went into a trucking business at about 5:30 p.m. and confronted a man inside.
"The suspect, the husband, shot the person at the trucking company and then turned and shot his wife".
A third male entered the trucking company building.
Police say there are at least 30 witnesses, KRON reported.
Youngblood said he would consider it a mass shooting, saying that the string of shootings were "certainly" connected. "It was a very short period of time, maybe 10-15 minutes".
The sheriff said he could only confirm that a single handgun was used in the attacks.
He then shot both of them before turning the gun on someone who rushed to the scene, police said. Youngblood presented this account of what allegedly happened.
When he arrived at the residence, the suspect fatally shot two more men, the sheriff said.

After carjacking a vehicle, the woman and child inside managed to escape.
As the gunman was driving away he was spotted by a deputy and suddenly pulled into a parking lot, where he shot himself in the chest and died. Youngblood did not disclose the identities of the victims.
"Obviously, there is some type of situation that caused the husband to be extremely upset", he said.
There were firearms recovered.
"This is the new normal", said deputy Donny Youngblood. The suspect fired shots at this man, who fled.
"The wife's dead", Youngblood said.
Authorities have not determined a motive in Wednesday's shooting spree in Bakersfield, however, they are confident a connection between the gunman and all five victims will be found.
Authorities did not release the name of the suspect or victims.
