Blasey Ford claimed Kavanaugh forced himself on her during a party in the early 1980s in Bethesda, Md., when the two were teenagers.

Senate Democrats slammed their GOP counterparts for scheduling what they described as a "sham" hearing on allegations of sexual assault levied against Judge Brett Kavanaugh on Tuesday, ripping them for refusing to allow corroborating witnesses. Judge, through his attorney, submitted a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee today regarding his recollections and his willingness to speak before a hearing.

The judge and his accuser, California research psychologist Christine Blasey Ford, are to be questioned publicly on the alleged episode from their youth - although Dr. Ford has yet to confirm that she will attend.

"As I understand it she's been emailed hopefully by now the majority who regretfully is not working with us on this will pick up the phone and call and talk with her, and I think that's the appropriate thing to do", Feinstein said.

"Obviously, if Judge Kavanaugh has lied about what happened that would be disqualifying", Collins said, but she added that she had spoken to Kavanaugh on the phone Friday and he had emphatically denied the allegations.

During a press conference Tuesday, Trump said it was up to the bureau to reopen the case, suggesting he would not request it. He is an outstanding intellect and outstanding judge respected by everybody.

Democrats are demanding that the FBI be given time to reopen its background investigation into Kavanaugh so it can check Ford's assertions.

Saphier said the Democrats are using the allegations as a political tool do kill another Republican nomination, but are ignoring their own past.

"This is a completely false allegation".

"I have never done anything like what the accuser describes - to her or to anyone", Kavanaugh said. She did not announce what the accusations against him are or who is making them. The reaction came as her Democratic challenger, Jennifer Wexton, tweeted: "This is bigger than our politics and will impact whether victims can trust Congress". Kavanaugh has denied the accusation. Judge once wrote a book about his high school days titled "Wasted: Tales of a GenX Drunk". Wilkinson has not returned calls from CNN seeking comment.

Finally, refer to Christine Blasey Ford by her name.

Shortly before Grassley's announcement, the senator said there would be private, telephone interviews of Kavanaugh and Ford conducted by committee staffers. Judge told the New York Times that Kavanaugh was a "brilliant student" who loved sports and was not "into anything insane or illegal".

She said she locked herself in the bathroom and listened until she heard the boys "going down the stairs, hitting the walls". They didn't even ask Ford if she'd be available to testify then.

The remarks by McConnell, R-Ky., seemed aimed at signaling that while Ford will be given her opportunity to detail her allegations under oath, party leaders - certainly for now - were not easing off their support of Trump's nominee.

Patty Murray, D-Washington, said recently on Twitter that she first ran for the Senate "after my daughter and I watched Anita Hill being grilled by an all-male Judiciary Committee that didn't look anything like me or so many others across the country and that wasn't asking the questions so many of us wanted asked".
