Nokia 7.1 hands-on: A $350 success story

Nokia 7.1, True Wireless Earbuds, Pro Wireless Earphones Launched: Watch Live Streaming, Updates

Right on schedule, the Finnish company launched the brand-new Nokia 7.1 at an event in London.

The new device has an affordable price point that doesn't reach the same levels as the Nokia 8, but it still sports some impressive tech inside and out. However, the specs are not as good as the Nokia 7 Plus, which launched in February of this year.

Nokia says the dual-lens camera system should produce better, more accurate low light shots thanks to the improved HDR capabilities. The fingerprint scanner is placed on the rear side of the smartphone. To Juho's point, non-HDR content viewed on the phone will be up-scaled in real-time using a dedicated 16bit engine that processes millions of pixels per second. Connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth v5.0, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, USB Type-C (v2.0), GPS/ A-GPS, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The phone will initially be available to pre-order starting tomorrow in the European markets in two colour variants including Gloss Midnight Blue and Gloss Silver. For the storage, you can get up to 64GB of internal storage, as well as a microSD card slot. Since its an Android One device, the Nokia 7.1 will get three years of monthly security patches and two years of OS updates. The display also supports HDR10, the most popular way of presenting high dynamic range video, and packs a claimed 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio.

There is microSD support on most variants of the phone, but that's only in some markets and it's now unclear what size cards the phone will be able to take. As you can see, there are openings for the microphone, USB-C charging port and single speaker on the bottom of the phone. We'll be sure to push the battery on this phone at the time of our full review.

The Android 9 Pie Beta update brings the majority of Android 9 Pie changes and features to Nokia 7 Plus.

It has a Snapdragon 636 processor, 3GB RAM and 32GB storage.

That means it's essentially stock Android software, so you won't get anything on the device that Google hasn't intended to include.

In the camera department, the Nokia 7.1 features a dual camera setup at the back with 12MP and 5MP sensors. The Nokia 7.1 runs Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box and comes affiliated to the Android One programme. It comes with a 12-megapixel primary sensor and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor for depth sensing.

The inclusion of a display notch will likely be as polarizing Android consumers as other cutout-equipped devices proved to be, though the mass market already clearly signaled it doesn't consider notches to be a deal-breaker, as evidenced by the excellent commercial performance of recent flagships from Apple and Huawei.
