A severe cyclone damaged homes and blew down trees and power poles in eastern India, where nine people were killed and about 300,000 forced to move to higher ground.

Red alert has been issued for districts of north Andhra Pradesh & south Odisha coasts.

There has so far been no report of any damage to property or blockage of road or rail movement in West Bengal owing to "Titli".

Seawater entered houses in Uppada in East Godavari district as the maximum of the height of the tides was of 10ft along the coast close to the point of landfall.

Padhi further stated, "Efforts are on to restore power supply in areas of Ganjam district except Aska and Purushottampur within 48 hours".

Reviewing the already afoot evacuation process starting with Ganjam district, Patnaik said all schools, colleges and anganwadi centres would be closed on October 11 and 12.

The Odisha unit of Congress on Wednesday opened a 24-hour emergency cell to help the people likely to be affected by the cyclone "Titli", which is fast approaching towards the coastal areas of the state. The department had advised complete suspension of fishing operations and asked people to stay indoors. Three boats were stranded near Gopalpur port from which 27 fishermen were rescued by the coast guard, said an official from National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). Vizag city is likely to face more than 100km/hr wind speed and heavy rainfall. Storm surge of about 1 metre above astronomical tide is very likely to inundate the low-lying areas of Ganjam, Khurda and Puri districts, it added.

Even though the very severe cyclonic storm Titli failed to cause major damages in the State, the incessant rain since Thursday has triggered flood in Rushikulya, Bada and Bahuda rivers. The rainfall intensity will decrease from Friday.

The very severe cyclonic storm Titli developed over the west-central Bay of Bengal and moved north-westwards with a speed of about 17 kmph during the last 6 hours. Thousands of people were evacuated to relief camps.

The districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam were all affected and a total of eight people were reported dead across the state.

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government on Wednesday directed the Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara district administrations to evacuate all those areas where cyclonic storm Titli is expected to pass through after making landfall on Thursday morning.
