Pacific Tsunami Warning Center oceanographer David Walsh said any tsunami from the quake would only affect areas immediately around the epicenter.

The quake in Papua raised the possibility of a local tsunami, although authorities said there was no significant tsunami threat to Hawaii or the wider Pacific region.

Magnitudes below 6.5Earthquakes of this magnitude are very unlikely to trigger a tsunami.

The country is still recovering after a 7.5-magnitude quake hit its mountainous interior in February, killing at least 125 people, cutting off access to villages and knocking out power.

Magnitudes between 7.6 and 7.8Earthquakes of this size may produce destructive tsunamis especially near the epicenter; at greater distances small sea level changes may be observed.

No reports of damage or injuries have surfaced from the quake.

There were a string of smaller tremors measuring up to 6.2 immediately before and after the main natural disaster. Surabaya is located about 200 kilometers from the quake's epicenter.

The 7.1-magnitude quake hit near the country's eastern New Britain island at 0748 AEDT, according to the center.

At least three people were killed when the shallow 6.0-magnitude natural disaster struck off the coast of Indonesia's popular tourist hotspots.
