The world's longest direct flight has taken off from Singapore and is expected to reach NY in the next 19 hours. The extreme ultra long-haul flights to and from the island nation are scheduled for 17 hours 50 minutes on the outbound and 18-hours and 30-minutes on the return to Singapore with the route replacing Doha to Auckland, now operated by Qatar Airways, as the world's longest.

If two meals aren't enough during a 19-hour flight, the premium economy ticket offers an additional meal on top of the refreshments. It also has hospital-grade air filters, multiple cabin temperature zones to optimize passenger comfort, and lighting with over 16 million possible settings that can be customized to specific routes to help passengers' circadian rhythms adjust to new time zones.

"These new flights will also provide convenient connections beyond Changi Airport, helping to boost connectivity to and through the Singapore hub", Mr Wilson said.

Prior to this, Qantas Airlines was hailed for plying their Boeing 787 on a "ground-breaking" 17-hour non-stop route from Perth to London earlier this year. Its on-time arrival just before 6:00 Newark marked the dawn of a new reign in the ultra-long-haul field. The aircraft can fly for over 20 hours or 18,000 kilometers (11,250 miles) non-stop.

For the flight crew - which includes two first officers and a 13-strong cabin contingent - the work load will be split into shifts, with each pilot having a minimum eight hours of rest during the flight.

Ahead of the departure at midnight local time, some passengers told the AFP news agency they were anxious about finding ways to pass the flight time.
