Breast cancer plate marks 10 years, $3 million raised

What many people might not be aware of is how much information about breast cancer treatment is outdated or false.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual worldwide health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure.

We talked to Dr. J. Jaime Alberty-Oller, surgical breast oncologist at The Dubin Breast Center of the The Tisch Cancer Institute at the Mount Sinai Health System in NY to help separate fact from fiction. It's all part of the Adelphi NY Statedewide Breast Cancer Hotline, which started 38 years ago and has helped thousands of women.

"Maine Cancer Foundation is extremely grateful for the success of the breast cancer awareness license plate, and the reliable income it provides to help in our mission to reduce the incidence and mortality of cancer across the state", said Tara Hill, executive director of Maine Cancer Foundation.

A 3D mammogram gives a view of the breast in slices rather than compressed and overlapping, so the possibility of a woman getting called back due to a false positive is reduced by up to 40 percent. She went to the Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Health South Florida for treatment. Carson Tahoe Breast Center was recently selected as the only provider in Nevada, and one of only 131 worldwide, to participate in the prestigious Tomosynthesis Mammographic Imaging Screening Trial (TMIST).

"As an example, if your mother had breast cancer at an earlier age, you should start screening yourself at an early age", Pecora said. If you or one of your first-degree relatives have the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation (which you can determine based on genetic testing), your doctor will likely recommend you get screened early. However, there are certain factors that would put women in a higher risk category.
