"We believe we have valid [reason for the] arrests for those nine individuals to include charges of riot and attempted assault", NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said at a press conference, adding that the raps could be upgraded.
Those officers managed to arrest three protesters, all antifa members. Anti-fascist protesters had gathered outside the building, prompting police to escort some of those inside the club in the opposite direction following the event. 'About 1-2 blocks away a 30 (proud boys) vs. 3 fight broke out'. In one video, an apparent group of Proud Boys could be seen beating a man on the ground. The NYPD released new footage Monday showing the altercation from an alternate angle in hopes of identifying the participants.
Police are reviewing additional video and other evidence to see if other crimes were committed.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said: "The NYPD is fully investigating last night's attack involving the Proud Boys". No serious injuries were reported.
Police are considering hate crime charges against supporters of a white nationalist group who were filmed attacking people and shouting homophobic slurs. The club had invited Gavin McInnes, the founder of the Proud Boys, as a guest speaker.
FA condemn 'unacceptable behaviour' from England fans before Spain game
Paco Alcacer's goal threatened a comeback and Sergio Ramos scored with the final touch but England were well worth their 3-2 win. Before Monday night, Spain hadn't conceded three goals in a competitive home game and hadn't lost a match at home since 2003.
Ahead of the speech, vandals smashed windows, filled a keypad lock with glue and spray-painted the doors of the Metropolitan Republican Club. A note was reportedly left saying the attack "is merely a beginning". "Hate can not and will not be tolerated in NY". He has described his group as a pro-Western Civilization fraternal organization.
Several elected officials expressed outrage over the violence and blamed the Proud Boys, which has been designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
McInnes, who co-founded Vice Media in 2008 and left the company in 2008, created the Proud Boys in 2016.
Members of the City Council and the state Assembly went a step further, calling on State Republican Party Chairman Ed Cox to step down.
And during his talk at the club, founder McInnes celebrated the assassination of a Japanese socialist politician even as he waved a sword at antifa protesters who were demonstrating against him. The NYPD contested that and said 48 officers were on the scene Friday with the primary mission to keep the two sides apart, arguing the police presence was more than adequate.
