"It has not really sunk in yet", Schumacher said.

In 2016, Schumacher junior finished second in both the German and Italian F4 championships and previous year when he stepped up to the F3 championships he was 12th with just one podium finish.

Michael Schumacher won the F3 German title in 1990 before starting his Formula One career one year later.

Berger raced against Schumacher's father and says the similarities between the pair are stark - backing Mick to make it onto the grid in F1 someday.

Before Monday's (NZ time) finale, Schumacher has moved 51 points clear of his nearest rival, Britain's Daniel Ticktum, and can no longer be caught in the third-tier racing series to clinch the first title of his young career.

"Congratulations to Mick on winning the FIA Formula 3 European Championship title", said Wolff, Head of Mercedes Motorsport.

"The championship party still has to wait, because there is another race to run tomorrow in which I want to give the maximum once more".

Schumacher had finished 12th in Saturday morning's race after an early crash forced him into the pits.

After a mediocre start, things clicked in July, when he won at Spa, Belgium, to claim his first victory in the 15th of 30 races this season.

As a 14-year-old, he was skiing with his father on the French Alps when Michael suffered the life-changing head injuries that leave him stricken to this day at home in Switzerland.

Finally racing under the family name, he stepped up to F4 racing in 2015. The 19-year-old German finished second in the second half of a doubleheader to score an insurmountable 347 points.

It marked his 13th podium from 29 races this season, eight of which have been wins, having also secured seven pole positions.

In 2014, he finished the season finishing second overall in the German, European and world championships.
